Answers to your questions from the Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association

The Kugluktuk Hunters and Trappers Organization has heard a number of questions about the proposed Grays Bay Road and Port Project. Here are our answers, drawn from our members' knowledge of this land and the herd, and from the research record.

The Grays Bay Road and Port Project is being sold to us with three big assumptions built in. All three are wrong.

Inuit consent remains absent. While Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. and the Kitikmeot Inuit Association support the initiative, opinions are split. The Kugluktuk and Burnside Hunters and Trappers Organizations, the rightful harvesting stewards of this territory and caribou under the Nunavut Agreement, have not granted their approval.

01

It is not the sure economic win it's made out to be. The biggest benefits flow to investors, outside companies, and government. At Nunavut mines already operating, Inuit hold only a small share of the jobs and pay, and companies keep missing their own Inuit hiring targets. Meanwhile, the healthy herd and the harvest we already have are an economy too — one this project puts at risk.

02

Moving the road would not fix it. There is no route through western Nunavut that avoids caribou habitat. Shift it one way and it still cuts the Dolphin and Union herd's range; shift it the other and it hits herds that are already in trouble.

Below are straight answers to the questions people are asking us. We have the research and the records to back every one of them, and we're glad to share our sources with anyone who wants them.
